What is a CGI script?

A CGI script is any program that runs on a web server. Figure: The Common Gateway Interface. Why CGI Scripts. CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. CGI defines a standard way in which information may be passed to and from the browser and server.

CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface script, and is used for running basic website scripts. CGI files are text-based files which contain coding in Perl or C# programming language. CGI files are usually stored in a “cgi-bin” within a website directory on a web server.
